Coraline

If you're a fan of Nightmare Before Christmas, and who isn't... Then go see Coraline. Here's a movie that was just beautiful looking. The story wasn't half bad either. I was expecting something more along the lines of corpse bride, different, out there but not too crazy, and I was WAY off. This movie was, without a doubt in my mind, NOT for children. Half the stuff that Coraline consisted of creeped me out. Very dark and grungy. I loved every second of it. Not a musical, which is a plus most of the time.

If you have ANY inclination about this movie, GO SEE IT. It will WOW you... and it's in 3D, good thing they stayed away from too much gimmicky 3D effects.

That's one great lookin' kid

One of my closest friends just had his baby today. Some of you may have known Michael as one half of the duo known as "Michael and Kenan". I grew up living right next store to their grandparents house where Michael has lived for most of his life. He and his girlfriend Lauren Arnevik have spent the last 3 days in the hospital waiting for and welcoming their son Jayden into this world.

Little Jayden was born early this morning, February 17, 2009 at 7:27am. He weighs 7 pounds 11 ounces. Full name, Jayden Michael Davis... there might be another middle name thrown in there at some point, there was still talk of it when we were at the hospital for a visit.

When I first spotted little Jayden.

We finally got michael to take him out and show him to the world.

The nurse held him for one last glamor pose before he went back into the holding tank.

I think he liked the camera... and GIANT flash he was being bombarded with...
in my defense, it was dark in there and the nurse said it was okay... :D

One more person to add to this going green planet and with a little guidance, a great person he'll become. Besides... YEAR OF THE OX...  probably the best Chinese Zodiac...
welcome to the club little man... wewt!

Miyazaki... you magical $#!*

I just finished watching Ponyo on the Clif, Hayao Miyazaki's latest addition to his ongoing list of animated feature films. If you've ever seen a Miyazaki movie, or any Studio Ghibli film for that matter, then you know what I mean when I say they are ALL worth seeing.

This movie is about a boy who finds a goldfish and takes it in as his friend. The goldfish eventually becomes best friends with the boy and wants nothing more than to become a human. Needless to say the film is littered with magic and consists of an AMAZING story. Studio Ghibli, to me, seems like a Japanese Disney. Not in the sense that they have theme parks, even though they do have one, more in the sense that they are probably best known for their use of magic and wonderful storytelling through traditional 2D animation. Very similar to disney back in the day. I believe each of Miyazaki's movies, and just about everything Studio Ghibli is making, is being brought to the U.S. by Disney along with John Lasseter, one of Pixar's head honchoes.

Definitely look into anything made by Hayao Miyazaki, if not for you, then for your children's sake. I wish I would have had these movies growing up. They would have been perfect next to the old disney classics, Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast... all classics, and these movies fit in quite well.

Internationally Boring

I'm a fan of Clive Owen... But not even HE could save this one. This movie seemed like it was longer than 2 hours... seemed more like 7 hours. There were parts where I had to fight the urge to sleep. I'm not being fair, the movie wasn't that bad. I liked the action, when there was action. It's funny because I found myself wondering what was going on and thinking how cool the shoot-out scene in the middle of the film was. I saw this movie with my cousin Jessica, my grandma Connie, and my mom. They all said the same things, hard to follow, boring parts, great action scenes, and hard to follow. It just seemed like this could have been a lot better... I'm not sure how else to put it.

I saw the trailer about a week ago, never heard of it before that. I guess I'm glad I saw it, as I am with most movies I see, but I still kinda wish I would have seen Coraline.

Been Hangin'

Wednesday, February 11th was my cousin Jessica's birthday. Wednesdays are the days to go get comic books. So I figured I'd invite Jessica along for a little NERD FUN. Went to get comics at 10am, then went to Tamodachi (a japanese store in rosedale) for a couple dunnys. After that we swung by Robot Love, someplace she's been wanting to see, and I've been wanting to show her for some time.

She picked up a few dunnys, I picked up a couple of shirts for pretty cheap, awesome shirts too. One of the shirts was designed by one of my favorite artists, Shepard Fairy.
I also bought a bag for gretchen that was designed by Shep.

Later that day, my grandma, Jessica and I went for lunch at Boba, the Asian restaurant I worked at a few summers ago. They loved it.

Yesterday, Thursday, I hung out at my grandma's house with her and Jessica. Jessica and I do a great deal of talking. We talk about all sorts of stuff, movies, music, art, hobbies, you name it, we've talked about it.

Today, Friday, I stopped by there and my grandma gave me a bunch of my grandpa's old paintbrushes and art supplies. She won't be using them and I might have a custom toy design job coming up really soon. My grandma, Jessica, and I were talking about doing some Ukrainian eggs and/or stained glass windows. Both of which are things that my grandpa used to do all the time and my grandma has left over materials for.

anyway... that's what I've been up to.

recent movies

Netflix:
Borne Ultimatum - Not bad, kinda ran together with the last two. I liked them all but I get confused between some of them. Definitely a must for any fans of the first two.

Shooter - Ended up liking this one a lot more than I thought I would. Not a bad movie, although I sort of saw the plot coming a mile away. Check it out.

Redbox:
Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist - Didn't think I'd like this one at all. That's why I didn't see it in theaters. Saw it the other night and it's definitely worth checking out.

Purchased DVD's:
Zac and Miri Make a Porno - Saw it in the theater, loved it... bought it, still love it. Kevin Smith (Clerks, Clerks II, Dogma, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) is a mad genius.

Afro Samurai: Resurrection - This anime, voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, is more of a feature film sequel to the First season of Afro Samurai. Very cool anime, lots of action, lots of violence. A must see for any anime lover.

Underworld I and II - A good set of movies for any emo/goth kid out there who loves vampires and werewolves. I watched them back to back, the second one starts pretty much where the first one ends, so that's cool I guess. They really weren't that bad, so if you've been wondering whether or not to watch them, go for it... if you have nothing else to do.

This shows how much of a nerd I am

Recently a couple of friends of mine, Dan and Joe, created pokemon trainers based on themselves somewhat. I had to get in the fun and show off my nerdy-ness... so here's the pics.

Keep in mind that these are the guys I would play pokemon with back when it was HIP.

StarDust

I guess I'm a bit late for this movie since it's been out for a while but Netflix sent it to me and I thought it was very good. I initially thought it was going to be like the "Chronicles of Narnia" since it looked as if it were set in that sort of timeframe and style, magical, mystical and such. But it was actually a much better movie. It wasn't quite a kids movie because of all the sexual innuendoes and somewhat mature content.

I watched it with my neighbor Michael and he felt the same, "It was good, I liked it."

I would say get out there and check this one out if you like the more fantasy based movies. I will be swinging by Janice's and Tammy's house to drop off the movie so they can watch it some time soon (they are my aunts).

Check it out
