I just finished watching Ponyo on the Clif, Hayao Miyazaki's latest addition to his ongoing list of animated feature films. If you've ever seen a Miyazaki movie, or any Studio Ghibli film for that matter, then you know what I mean when I say they are ALL worth seeing.
This movie is about a boy who finds a goldfish and takes it in as his friend. The goldfish eventually becomes best friends with the boy and wants nothing more than to become a human. Needless to say the film is littered with magic and consists of an AMAZING story. Studio Ghibli, to me, seems like a Japanese Disney. Not in the sense that they have theme parks, even though they do have one, more in the sense that they are probably best known for their use of magic and wonderful storytelling through traditional 2D animation. Very similar to disney back in the day. I believe each of Miyazaki's movies, and just about everything Studio Ghibli is making, is being brought to the U.S. by Disney along with John Lasseter, one of Pixar's head honchoes.
Definitely look into anything made by Hayao Miyazaki, if not for you, then for your children's sake. I wish I would have had these movies growing up. They would have been perfect next to the old disney classics, Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast... all classics, and these movies fit in quite well.
